How should I prepare for hydroseeding?

Between 4-6 inches of good topsoil is necessary for lawn establishment. The topsoil should be graded to allow for proper drainage, and all roots, stones an other debris removed. The topsoil should not be hard packed nor should it be so loose that walking on it creates deep depressions. Once the soil is properly prepared, hydroseeding should take place as soon as possible thereafter.

When is the best time to hydroseed?

Hydroseeding can be done successfully during spring, summer and fall. It can also be done after the growing season with germination occuring the following spring. The best time is in the fall, as the soil temperatures are the warmest, yet the days are getting shorter and cooler.

How should I water my newly hydroseeded lawn?

Hydroseeded lawns must be kept moist throughout the germination process; 14-21 days depending on seed variety. Water should be applied on all areas evenly without creating runoff. The amount of water necessary will depend on weather conditions, with the summer season typically requiring the most.

How long will it take before I see results?

Depending on the seed mix used, you will see results as early as 7 days. Not all seed types germinate at the same time. Total germination can take up to 21 days if watered properly. If watering is not possible, then germination time will depend on rainfall.

What about weeds?

Weed seeds exist in all topsoil. You can't see them but they are there. It is important to hydroseed right after the soil is prepared; before any weed seeds germinate. Weed seeds that do germinate should not be allowed to grow and subsequently go to seed. Proper mowing after 3-4 weeks will take care of that. Weeds that occur the following season can be treated with a commercially available weed control product.
